USB Cables And Extensions.
The photo shows a USB-A plug: one that connects to your computer. Usually, a cable will have a B plug or a Mini-B plug at the other end. An extension for an existing cable will have an A plug at one end and an A socket at the other.
Longer cables, or extensions, are useful if your computer has sockets at the back, it's on the floor, you're using a multi-port USB hub, or you want devices to be positioned away from your immediate work area. However, the USB 2.0 standard specifies a maximum single-run cable length of 5.0 metres, unless you use a booster hub, to prevent signal degradation.
USB-A To B Cable.
The cable has a USB-A plug at one end and a B plug at the other. Usually, it connects an A socket on your computer or your hub to the B socket on a desktop device such as an ADSL modem, printer, scanner, fax, or a second hub.
USB A To Mini-B Cable.
The cable has a USB-A plug at one end and a Mini-B plug at the other. Usually, it connects an A socket on your computer or your hub to the Mini-B socket on a pocket device such as a camera, phone, back up disk drive, or card reader.
There's also a USB-A to Micro-B cable which usually comes with a phone. It's used to charge the battery and exchange data with a computer.
USB-A To A Extension.
The extension cable has a USB-A plug at one end and an A socket at the other. Because an extension is designed to extend an existing cable, they are not made in 5.0 metre lengths as the combined length would exceed the recommended 5.0 metre limit.
USB-A To B Illuminated Cable.
The cable has a USB-A plug at one end and a B plug at the other. Usually, it connects an A socket on your computer or your hub to the B socket on a desktop device such as an ADSL modem, printer, scanner, fax, or a second hub. The lava cables are very special: they light up at each end, in blue.
